Henry Knox : miscellaneous papers, 1787-1793.

Contemporary copies. Primarily extracts, all relating to some aspect of Knox's attempts to keep peace between the U.S. and Spain while U.S. commissioners were in Madrid negotiating for free navigation of the Mississippi River. Excerpts from four letters, 1787-1788, from Knox to General Harmar regarding John Sullivan and letters he wrote to Don Diego Gardoqui and Major William Brown. One letter approves Harmar's courtesy visit to the Spanish commandant at St. Louis; extracts from three letters, 1790-1792, from Knox to military officers and an Indian agent stressing the need for tact and courtesy in dealing with the Spanish; extract from Knox's instructions to Arthur St. Clair, 21 Mar. 1791, regarding a proclamation made necessary by "certain companies" buying up Indian lands in Ga., and a Dr. James O'Fallon is levying troops illegally in Ky. for "making establishments" on the lands. Also includes extracts from three letters, 1792, from and to James Seagrove referring to Knox's dealing with the activities of General Alexander McGillivray, a Creek Indian chief who successfully incited Indians to work with the Spanish against the Americans; and a message from Knox, 27 Apr. 1793, to the Chickasaw nation promising to supply them with arms, ammunition, and corn, and threatening them if they remained hostile.
